Dear ,
Wish you a Happy New Year...!
First, my apologies for long silence... It was not intended, but many circumstances moved away my focus out of my own research work. However, during the time I paid more attention to my undergraduate research students (who were the first very few in BIM from Sri Lanka) to get them complete with something valuable. You can find their interim publications in my publications page. I will update you once they made their final publications.
There were some key developments during the last year.
BCIM Initiative
Building Cost Information Modelling (BCIM) Initiative was novel concept brought into the BIM world. It was a concept born within the BIMLab Net. We consider it to be very important to bring best value for money through BIM adoption.
It was well received when we presented the concept at Hong Kong QS BIM Conference in November last year; but we honestly had to agree that it was long way ahead. However, someone has to take the initiative. We took it, and we hope that QS and Cost Engineering community will take it forward with enthusiasm.
Access BCIMI website here.
iBIM²
I created the open website for Innovative Building Information Modelling and Management (iBIM²) internet group as a portal to bring together the Sri Lankan individuals who are keen on bringing in BIM and related concepts and technologies for the benefit of Sri Lankan building (construction) industry.
The website was setup using free Google tools (blogger and Google groups) which makes anybody be able to become a member and to actively participate (of course you’ll need a Google account which is free). The primary reason was that BIMLab Net is with limited resources that I would not be able to sustain it with a large number of registered users within it.
Please use the forum to discuss issues and ask questions. If you are interested in authoring short articles, please let me know your Google ID so that I can add you as an author.

The New Look
I transferred the BIMLab Net site to a new server expecting better performance (not sure if I actually got it though). Updated the site with a new look replacing the less performing earlier template. Hope you like the new look.
I’ve now added a twitter feed. Check that out regularly (or follow us) as I will tweet interesting feeds as and when I find them.
I got good feedbacks for my article “BIM for DIM” last time. Thank you all. I hope now you are quite knowledgeable in the subject by reading more and (some) with real life experience. Find few new (and not so new) articles below.
Have a joyous weekend and a wonderful week ahead.
Kind regards
Suranga

Vectorwork presents Arboleda Open BIM Project which brings a good example of total Integrated Project Design Solution. The presentation which includes ten short videos offers great details BIM based project delivery workflow from inception to production information stage. Arboleda is a real-life project which was completed in 2011. However, BIM had not been fully utilised in the real project; only the Architectural detailing had been done using BIM tools. What they are presenting here is revisit to the design through the ideal BIM route to exhibit how the real designing could have been done more efficiently with BIM. The presentation is very much comprehensive covering from Architectural to Structural, Energy, Egress, and Quantities.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an important component in sustainable procurement strategies. With the rise in popularity, it is gaining the potential to be industry standard for building projects. By taking the digital design data to a new level, BIM promotes better integration and optimum use of resources for the sustainability in all aspects of construction.
